Setup Port Forwarding on Your Router

Setting up port forwarding is simple and should only take you a few minutes. During the process you're going to need to be at your computer in order to change your router's settings. The process will be a little bit differrent for each brand of router, so find the instructions for your router and follow those. As always, if you run into any problems, you can contact me using the contact info from the main page. So lets get started. Since at the moment I do not have a Linksys router, the images included below are "borrowed" from a great site, PortForward.com. They have a wealth of information about port forwarding, so if you are interested, check them out.

Linksys

We'll start with Linksys, since it seems to be the most common brand of SOHO routers on the market. First we'll need to open a new browser window and in the address bar type in: http://192.168.1.1 and press enter. You will be presented with a logon box like the one pictured below. The default username and password will both be admin (lowercase). If you have ever changed the default password, please enter the password that you changed it to.

Once you are in, you should see a screen similar or exactly the same as the one pictured below.

From here, you need to click on the "Applications and Gaming"tab. You will see on this tab a few subheadings. Click on the subheading labeled "Port Range Forward".

D-Link

First we'll need to open a new browser window and in the address bar type in: http://192.168.0.1 and press enter. You will be presented with a logon box like the one pictured below. The default username will be admin (lowercase) and leave the password blank. If you have ever changed the default password, please enter the password that you changed it to.

Once you are in, you should see a screen similar or exactly the same as the one pictured below.

You will see on this tab the Virtual Server settings. This is where we will be setting up port forwarding. From here we will be creating 3 port forwarding rules. For rule 1, make sure that the radio button is next to "Enabled" and move to the name section and enter Live1. Next, move to the private IP section and enter 192.168.0.250. In the protocol type section, make sure the dropdown shows "Both". For both private port and public port enter 88. In the schedule section, make sure that the radio button is next to "Always" and click on apply. The entry you just made should appear below. For rule 2, make sure that the radio button is next to "Enabled" and move to the name section and enter Live2. Next, move to the private IP section and enter 192.168.0.250. In the protocol type section, make sure the dropdown shows both. For both private port and public port enter 2074. In the schedule section, make sure that the radio button is next to "Always" and click on apply. The entry you just made should appear below. For rule 3, make sure that the radio button is next to "Enabled" and move to the name section and enter Live1. Next, move to the private IP section and enter 192.168.0.250. In the protocol type section, make sure the dropdown shows "Both". For both private port and public port enter 3074. In the schedule section, make sure that the radio button is next to "Always" and click on apply. The entry you just made should appear below. We are now done with step 2 and it's on to Step 3.
